MARPOL Regulations: Annexes, Special Areas and Port Waste Management
Waste generated onboard—oily mixtures, sewage, garbage and cargo residues—poses a direct risk to the marine environment. The MARPOL 73/78 Convention is the global framework to prevent pollution from ships, defining annexes, special areas and operational control requirements. This article summarises what MARPOL covers and how waste delivery to port reception facilities is addressed in the EU and Spain.
