Engineering the future of ship repair and shipbuilding
At SYM Naval, innovation is at the core of our identity. Through our R&D initiatives we anticipate the challenges of the maritime industry, applying advanced engineering to deliver safer, more efficient and more sustainable vessels.
From digital ship models that optimize project planning to SYMlab, our dedicated innovation platform, we design solutions that improve performance and reduce downtime. Our projects in electrification, zero-emission propulsion and eco-efficient technologies reflect our commitment to leading the transition towards a greener and more competitive maritime sector.
Innovation, sustainability and quality at the core
Innovation in action
At SYM Naval, innovation takes shape through SYMlab, our platform for research and development. Here we combine naval engineering expertise with the latest digital tools to design, validate and implement solutions that improve efficiency and sustainability.
One of SYMlab’s main advances is the digital ship model: a 3D virtual representation that lets our engineers simulate scenarios, test repair strategies and detect issues before the first intervention. This digital-first approach increases accuracy, optimizes resources and minimizes downtime.
The digital ship model also enhances communication with shipowners, who can validate solutions in advance and make informed decisions. All processes are aligned with ISO 14001 and 45001, reinforcing safety and environmental responsibility.
Together, SYMlab and the digital ship model allow SYM Naval to deliver projects that are faster, safer and more cost-efficient, supporting the maritime industry’s transition to eco-efficient operations.
Project Castalia
Castalia is SYM Naval’s flagship innovation project and the first 100% electric harbour vessel of its kind in Europe. Already in operation, it proves that electric propulsion can deliver real, reliable performance in daily port service while drastically reducing environmental impact.
Designed as a working vessel and a technological reference, Castalia integrates advanced naval engineering with eco-efficient systems to demonstrate how electrification can replace conventional engines without sacrificing efficiency or safety. With 12.5 m length, 485 kWh of battery capacity and multipurpose capabilities, it supports mooring assistance, waste collection, personnel transfer and environmental monitoring with zero emissions and minimal noise.
Castalia represents a benchmark for the maritime industry’s energy transition. It combines innovation, sustainability and proven results, positioning SYM Naval at the forefront of zero-emission shipbuilding and paving the way for the next generation of eco-efficient harbour vessels.
Innovation applied to operations
Smart solutions for safer, faster shipbuilding & repair
At SYM Naval, innovation is more than research—it is part of our daily operations. From SYMlab and the digital ship model to Castalia and zero-emission projects, we apply advanced engineering tools that optimize planning, reduce downtime and improve sustainability.
Our commitment is clear: deliver reliable, certified solutions that anticipate the needs of shipowners and support the maritime industry’s transition towards a safer, more competitive and sustainable future.
