Castalia
100% Electric Harbour Tug

Electric shipbuilding in operationA real-world 100% electric harbour tug

Castalia was developed as a practical response to the growing demand for zero-emission port operations. Designed and built by SYM Naval, it is a fully electric harbour vessel that demonstrates how zero-emission propulsion can be successfully combined with efficiency, versatility and reliability in daily port service.

With a length of 12.5 metres, 485 kWh of battery capacity and up to 10 hours of operational autonomy, Castalia integrates advanced naval engineering with multipurpose capabilities, including mooring assistance, waste collection, crew transfer and environmental monitoring. The project sets a new benchmark for electric harbour vessels, proving that sustainable propulsion is a viable and operational solution for modern ports.

Electric Propulsion

100% electric propulsion system powered by high-capacity LiFePO₄ batteries, delivering zero emissions and significantly reduced noise for cleaner port operations.

Autonomy

Up to 10 hours of continuous operation, with flexible navigation modes (eco, cruise and manoeuvring) to optimise energy consumption in every operating phase.

Control

Integrated CAN BUS diagnostics with real-time monitoring of propulsion, batteries and navigation systems, giving operators full operational visibility.

Safety

Comprehensive safety architecture including battery monitoring, gas detection and automatic alarm protocols, ensuring reliable performance in demanding port environments.

Sustainable port servicesDesigned for real port operations

Castalia shows how fully electric port vessels can replace traditional diesel units in everyday harbour operations. By eliminating emissions and significantly reducing noise, it contributes to cleaner ports, safer working environments and more sustainable maritime activity without sacrificing performance.

Designed as a multipurpose harbour vessel, Castalia supports key port tasks such as mooring assistance, waste collection, crew and supply transfers, as well as environmental monitoring and emergency response. All operations are carried out silently and without emissions, proving that zero-emission propulsion is not a future concept, but a reliable solution already in service.

Design & EngineeringInnovation driving zero-emission performance

Castalia was conceived as a zero-emission working platform, combining fully electric propulsion with intelligent control systems designed for real port operations. Its architecture prioritises energy efficiency, operational flexibility and safety, allowing the vessel to perform multiple harbour tasks with minimal environmental impact.

A central CAN BUS system manages propulsion, batteries and navigation, providing full system visibility and real-time diagnostics. Navigation modes —eco, cruising and manoeuvring— optimise energy consumption and adapt autonomy to each operational scenario, while continuous monitoring and alarm protocols ensure reliable performance in demanding port environments.
